Yes. Official sumo tournaments (basho) in Tokyo take place only in January, May and September, but at Sunamachi Ginza Sumo Stable you can watch real sumo and try it yourself all year round, on almost any day. It is the ideal way to experience sumo in Tokyo when there is no tournament on.
It is completely authentic. This is a genuine sumo experience in a real, local Tokyo neighborhood — not a staged tourist attraction and not a dance performance. The sumo is real, performed by former wrestlers and trained athletes, and you experience it up close.
Our dohyo is hand-built by a professional yobidashi — the specialist craftsmen who construct the rings used in official sumo tournaments — using the very same clay and sand as the Ryogoku Kokugikan, sumo's grand arena. When you step onto it, you are standing on the real thing.
Yes. This is a hands-on experience. Changing facilities are provided, and you can put on a real mawashi (the traditional sumo belt) and step onto the ring to try sumo yourself — not just watch.
Absolutely. Families are warmly welcomed. Children aged 4 and up and their parents can take part, and our team is here to help every family join in. It is a once-in-a-lifetime memory for children and parents alike. Children under 4 enter free.

At the Kokugikan you watch a tournament from a distance, only during the three Tokyo tournament months. Here, you experience sumo up close in an intimate local setting, all year round — and you can actually step onto the ring and try it yourself.
